Words Do Matter!
I was in a department store recently when I heard a mother let loose on her child. I am what some would call an “older mom” now. I understand moms getting frazzled, I understand kids throwing tantrums and I don’t ever assume because a child does their mom is a “bad mom” Why?
Because I have been there! If we are being honest, it happens to us all!
However for this woman, I felt anger! The words coming out of her mouth to her child was horrific to me. This wasn’t just a mom who was raising her voice or frazzled. This was a woman throwing out abusive words and calling her child names. Oh, how my heart hurt for this child.
I know grown men and women who still hurt deeply from words said to them by their parents. The Bible says “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18 NIV
The fastest way to lose your child’s heart can be your words! If you are an angry, criticizing, and condescending parent I would encourage you STRONGLY to change. It is NEVER too late to change but it will take great effort, lots of prayer and maybe even counseling.
Several months ago Ruth from The Better Mom did a 30 day series on anger-I have struggled with in my past and wrote about in here. The response was amazing! There are so many parents struggling in this area, so MANY! She now has an eBook where you can read all of the testimonies and devotions from the women who write at The Better Mom, called From Grouchy to Great!
In the same way your words can tear down a child they can also build them up! Affirming words can build a child’s confidence, encourage them, grow them, and help you connect with them like nothing else! Choose your words wisely! These are YOUR children!!
Please don’t take this post like you’re bad if you sometimes get angry or yell or have a horrible day! YOU WILL! You are human but grace can cover it. Your children are the most forgiving people. Go to them and let them know when you have stepped over the line with your words but if this is a regular issue take control over it now!
