I thought Sunday would be a great day to do these posts for so the next four Sunday’s will cover a different spiritual topic! I can’t believe this is the last Sunday one. This month has flown by!!
Serving can be such a beautiful thing to do as family! It is not just beautiful because it is a wonderful thing to do, but also because it is rewarding and honoring to God. We are to care for the sick, the weak, and the poor! Jesus was our biggest role model in serving and we should want to be like him and we should lead our children into the role of serving others. In this self centered culture it will go against everything else they are taught in the world and that makes it even more important for us parents to teach.
A list of ways to serve others:
Widows – We have an 83 year old widow that lives across the street. My children love serving here. They bring in her mail and her garbage can and anything else she needs them to do. They have developed a close relationship, especially my youngest daughter and her! What a gift, not just to her but to my daughter who lost one of her grandmothers when she was just 3.
Nursing or Retirement Homes – The elderly just love to have visits from children! Some have not been visited in such a long time and this is such a wonderful way to bless others and to share Jesus. You can use the holidays coming up to deliver Thanksgiving baskets or Christmas cookies or cards!
Hospital Visits – This is something I have wanted to do now that my children are older. Find a list for the ones in the hospital from your church and visit. Again, your family’s visit can make a difference to someone else.
Soup Kitchens – Great way to serve the poor. Your family can stand in a line and just serve food to people’s plates. A few years back we packed Thanksgiving Meals up to families who needed it. Someone from each family came and picked up a meal from us.
Mission Trips – Many churches or organizations do mission trips. I would caution you to be picky; I have heard HORROR stories about mission trips. I have also heard sometimes the trips hinder the missionaries on the ground that are living there day in and day out, sometimes in very difficult and even dangerous situations so they can spread God’s Word! Be mindful of them. Do your research, know exactly what the trip will entail and if you are sending teens a lone (without you) find out how they will be chaperoned and how everything works in the group. Remember, just because it seems like a good thing doesn’t always mean it is! Pray about it, teach your children to listen to God’s voice on where HE wants them to go!
Times of Disaster – Disaster is such a horrible time for so many people. When tornados hit certain areas, big groups went to volunteer to help people. A great way to do some hard labor helping people and a great chance to pray and witness to people!
Church -Do not forget your church. You should be serving there is some capacity! They need you! We attend a small church and boy do they need servants! It is a blessing and wonderful lessons to your children to see you serving your church!
Find ways to serve any way you can-the beauty of serving is it can be done easily as a family! If you start when your children are young it will be much more natural to them!
