There is no doubt about it, we are cat lovers. We have two beautiful orange tabby cats that have both been adopted. We got Redford first and a few years later we added Winston to our family, Winston happens to be a polydactyl cat which means he has more than the usual number of toes on one or more of its paws. For Winston it is both paws.
I have had cats since I have been on my own at 18. At first I got a cat because I moved into a really old house and was terrified of mice. But it didn’t take me long to become totally in love with cats and I have had one or more at all times since.
I have been very fortunate in all the cats I have owned have lived long lives but because I’m in my mid 40’s I have lost several over the years and it is never ever easy saying goodbye to a family member. I will say Redford and Winston get along better than any pair of cats I have owned and they each have their own unique personalities that everyone loves. They are both social in their own way.
Redford is very loving and very outgoing. He is loved by not only our family but several families around our home. He just lets kids pick him up and love on him. He has a dominant personality (not aggressive at all) . but very confident and sure of himself. He doesn’t fear much which sometimes makes me a little nervous.
Winston is a little more nervous around strangers but he loves anyone he knows. He has such a fun personality. He actually plays fetch with you and loves to play more than any cat I have owned.
My cats love the warmer weather and love to have some outdoor adventures. I’m glad they get to explore but I want them to stay safe doing it.
Here are some tips that will help you cats stay more safe outdoors this summer:
*Always make sure your cat is neutered or spayed. There are so many advantages to this but don’t even think about letting your cats outside without this being done first. There is a huge population of cats that are unwanted and abandoned and you don’t want to contribute to that, also being neutered or spayed has many health benefits.
*Make sure they are also micro-chipped. Even if you walk them on a leash or don’t let them go outside you never know when you cat could slip out of the house. You want to know that if someone finds them they will be chipped so they can be reunited with you.
*Make sure to always check your car before shutting the doors. I know most people only think dogs like to jump in cars but I have one cat that loves to. I’m not sure if he really wants to go for a ride but he loves exploring cars. You do not one want to accidentally shut the door with your cat inside. The temperatures in the summer get hot very very fast and your cat will not be able to survive. Always do a second look and make sure no animals have gotten in the car.
*Don’t have your cats outside in extreme temperatures: The severe cold or severe heat is not good for your kitties and could cause them to become very ill. Keep them indoors in extreme weather.
*Always make sure they stay hydrated with plenty of water. If your cats go outside make sure to leave water for them on your porch or near your home somewhere. You don’t want them to be without water or to look for it in other places such as pools with unsafe chemicals.
*Make sure your cat is up to date with the vet. She should be vaccinated and given a clean bill of health before going outdoors. Also make sure they have flea treatment, these pesky things can cause cats awful grief and can infest your home.
*Even if your cat is chipped you should also have a collar and tag. Some people won’t get the chip checked but the tag is a quick way for other people to know this cat has an owner and where the cat lives.
*Enforce a curfew. Yes, even your cats should have one. The night time is a dangerous time outside for your cats. There are wild animals and other cats who want to fight and it is just best to get them in. Use treats to entice them back. They will actually get used to a consistent time with the treats and will expect it.
if you don’t mind your cat enjoying the outdoors these tips will help make it a little safer for them.
Just a couple of years ago a Tractor Supply Co. came to our area. It is less than 2 miles away and we love having it here. You will be so surprised all you can buy here in one stop. We had everything in our cart from cat food to tools and even treats for us. You do not have to be a farmer to love Tractor Supply Co.
