We live in a world of technology. When I think about the last 10 years and how far we have come with technology it is crazy! I was just telling my oldest son (15) that when I was looking to work at home when he was young it was so much more difficult. There was NO internet! It is just amazing today with the laptops, tablets, cell phones, game systems and fancy PC’s how much we can do. It can benefit our lives quite a bit, everything from school work to business and everything in between. However, it can also cause heartache and danger.
You have a family that can be exposed to so many horrible things on the internet. Your children have access to the most evil things with just one click of a mouse. They can see things that could alter their life forever! You spouse faces temptations beyond belief and marriages are feeling the deep effects from pornography every day!
We can find ways to keep our family safe online but it does take extra effort and time! Some great ways to do this are:
Get an Internet Accountability Software – We love Covenant Eyes, Internet Accountability monitors the websites visited, the search terms used, and the YouTube videos watched, and lists them in an easy-to-read Report that is designed to start a conversation about healthy online habits. Parents, see where your kids go online. Adults, reduce Internet temptations and protect the relationships you value most.
Being very choosy what rooms your children have internet access to – I will warn you though. This gets much tougher as your kids get older. When they are teens and have papers due and many things going on you may need to be more flexible. This is another great reason for software.
Talk to your family – Let your children know what you expect, be honest about the harmful things they can come across. I believe in being very truthful with my kids. They will find out soon enough about the real world, I want them to find out from me.
Check your children’s history – Nothing should be a secret, of course again when they are older they can delete it so be mindful of this!
Have Accountability– no one in the family should be afraid to share their passwords, I know this sounds harsh but in today’s time when there are predators everywhere we need to know what are kids are doing!
Monitor Their Social Media – If your children are old enough and have social media make sure you monitor it. I hear parents say they trust their kids and don’t want to intrude on their children’s privacy. You are the PARENTS, INTRUDE!! It is your job to keep your kids safe! I know some may not agree with me on this but when your children are adults they have the privacy. Set the standards when they are young and they won’t be near as resistant to you being nosy! We live in dangerous times. This isn’t just about sexual predators either; you want to make sure your children are not being cyber bullied which is a huge thing right now.
