The Door in the Wall by Marguerite De Angeli is one of our favorites. This book is a Newbery Winner and certaintly deserves one, it is one that captures your heart pretty quickly and you can’t wait to read the next chapter. I enjoyed reading this to my son so much and it became one of his favorites too.
When this book starts off you have one spoiled child who is used to a life of privilege and is training to be a knight. However he is stricken with an illness that changes his life and his destiny forever. A monk begins to help him live life without the full use of his legs and he not only grows stronger physically but grows in character along the way.
What I love about this book is there are no quick fixes or miracles in a sense that fixes his broken body, however the trial of the illness and separation of his family along with the training of a wise man helps this boy to have more compassion and courage then he ever had before sickness fell over him.
I also believe books like this teach our children valuable lessons about persevering through hard times. We are not entitled to anything, everythng we have (material things, gifts, our body) and every breath we take our gifts from God- This book is a great reminder of that!
