Studies show that eating a meal together as a family several days a week has many benefits. Children that have meals with their family are less likely to get in trouble with their peers, have drug/alcohol issues, and will do better in school! They are also less likely to have depression and will have higher self esteem.
It is amazing that JUST having meals together does all that!
If you are not having a meal together I would encourage you to start! You can start slow, get the family together and let them know that you want to eat at least one meal together this coming week! It doesn’t have to be dinner but find a meal time where it will be more likely everyone will be home!
When you sit at the table together, you have a wonderful chance to have great conversations and another chance to get to know each other in a deeper way! If you are not used to this, it can be awkward at first, especially if your children are tweens/teens but push through the awkwardness and continue doing it. It would be wonderful if you could start doing it several times a week!
One of the questions I ask my family to get conversation going is:
What was the best thing that happened to you today? What was the worst? This is a great way to start a conversation!
You can choose the table time to:
Read a chapter book
Read the Bible/devotional
Play a Table Game
Share about your day
Share School/Art Work so the whole family can see what everyone is accomplishing
If you are struggling with sibling fighting, another great thing we have done was everyone goes around the table and says one thing they love about everyone at the table. Some very moving moments have happenened during this time!
The FamilyDinnerProject is a great website for the family table, it tells about specific games, conversations, and more to have at the table.
I also love this by We Are That Family, she made a chalkboard out of her table to have intentional family table time, she made a way for people to do placemats also!
