The first day of school can be an exciting time for our kids but it can also be stressful. New classes, new classmates, and sometimes even new schools can cause stress. If we can do things to make the first day of school fun and exciting it is a great thing to do to make it an exciting day for them. We homeschool and I can’t always guarantee they will love the workload but they will love their 1st day of school traditions! I always try to make a big deal of the first day to make it special!
These 5 Back to School Traditions are good for homeschool, or traditional school-age kids.
A Special Breakfast– We always do a box full of fresh doughnuts on the first day of school. It is the only day we do doughnuts so the kids get really excited about this. You can also do a special cookie cake or even something more healthy – just make sure there is something special about it so the kids get excited!
Back to school supplies gifts– I love to make getting new school supplies special. Every year I get some kind of special container and fill it with new supplies. I always try to buy something new each year that they have never received like special glittery pencils or something else that is fun! S
Some fun things you can put in their container are:
- Crayons
- Kleenex
- Glue sticks
- Post it notes
- Index cards
- Pencils or Pens
- Erasers
- Candy
- Special toy or notebook
- Stickers
- Hand Sanitizer
A yearly photograph– I love seeing all the wonderful ideas on Pinterest with back to school pictures. You can do the same pose every year at the same place or just do something fun with signs with the year they are going into! There are so many fun choices for back to school pictures!
1st day of school interview– I love these printouts you can find around the internet where you interview your kids! It will be so fun to see the answers your kids give you and comparing them years later! Questions like what do you want to be when you grow up? What are you looking forward to the most this year? What’s your favorite color? And so on and so forth! They will be so glad to read these for years to come and so will you!
Special dinner with the family– I am all about connecting as a family and the first day of school is the perfect time to celebrate that evening with a great family dinner! This is a great way to hear about the new teachers, curriculum (if you homeschool) and what the expectations are for the school year!
There are so many ways to make the 1st day of school special! I think it is the perfect time to start a new tradition and your children will be so excited about the time you celebrate this incredible time for them as a family.
