It is National Reading month! What better way to celebrate that than with a great book list!
I love treasury books! There is just something special about one big book full of great stories or the “best of stories” from particular authors. They are wonderful for gifts or adding to your library! Treasury books also make great books to take on trips, instead of taking several bedtimes or reading aloud you can pick one or two treasury books and have plenty of stories for the time away! I love that!
I wanted to put a list together of our favorite ones, it is hard to narrow down the top 10 but I think I have done it!
The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh – Presents a comprehensive, unabridged collection of Winnie-the-Pooh stories, accompanied by Shepard’s original full-color illustrations, as well as headbands and ribbon markers, colorful bookplate, and biographies of the author and illustrator.
There is just something wonderful about that silly old bear and his friends! If you have never picked up a Winnie the Pooh book, it is a must! We have enjoyed pooh on tv but to me, the books are much much more! Kids of all ages will enjoy them, I know I do!
The Real Mother Goose – For more than seventy-five years THE REAL MOTHER GOOSE has been delighting millions of children, and today the magic is as strong as ever. Heralded as the “standard” Mother Goose by parents, grandparents, teachers, and librarians, this wonderful book with Blanche Fisher Wright’s lively, colorful pictures makes an enchanting introduction for the very young. Mother Goose rhymes are a vital part of childhood. And this collection of essential rhymes has been reproduced exactly as they have been repeated from generation to generation.
No library is complete without a good book of nursery rhymes! We are getting away from these classics today and I didn’t want my children to miss them, this book is my favorite mother goose collection!
The 20th-Century Children’s Book Treasury: Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud – Unparalleled in scope and quality and designed for reading aloud and sharing, this splendid anthology brings together some of the most memorable and beloved children’s books of our time. Here are classics such as Madeline and Curious George; contemporary bestsellers such as Guess How Much I Love You and The Stinky Cheese Man; Caldecott Medal winners such as Make Way for Ducklings and Where the Wild Things Are; and family favorites such as Goodnight Moon, The Sneetches, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Alexander & The Terrible, No Good Very Bad Day, soon to be a motion picture.
This is probably our favorite one of all time!!! All three of my children LOVED this book and every single home with children or grandchildren in it should have this book! This was a favorite to take on trips. We actually have two copies, it was so popular with us!
Centerburg Tales: More Adventures of Homer Price – Centerburg might be your town. Grampa Hercules and his never-ending tall tales, Dulcy Dooner, the uncooperative citizen, unbusinesslike Uncle Ulysses and his friendly lunchroom, the flustered sheriff, the pompous judge—they are all as American as they come. But there’s a subtle and delightful difference. In Centerburg, along with the routine of day-to-day living, the most preposterous things keep happening.
Home Price is loveable! The boys in your house will especially love the crazy adventures Homer gets himself into! The illustrations have that old, classic beauty to them!
HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics: A Child’s First Collection – From early, beloved classics such as Goodnight Moon and Harold and the Purple Crayon to such recent treasures as If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Pete’s a Pizza, this collection assembles twelve of the greatest picture books ever published. A Family Treasury of Little Golden Books: 46 Best-Loved Stories Poky Little Puppy and The Tawny Scrawny Lion are just two of the 46 classic Little Golden Books included in this unparalleled collection. Selected by noted a children’s book editor, and with a new introduction by scholar, Leonard S. Marcus, no other collection brings so many time-tested favorites together in one place. A wonderful gift item, complete with a ribbon marker, that will occupy a special place in every home.
There is just something about Golden books that bring back a flood of memories! I probably love this one more than the kids because of the nostalgia with it but I love that so many of my favorite golden books are in one big book!
James Herriot’s Treasury For Children – Warm And Joyful Tales – A charming countryside with a kind, loveable vet and all the wonderful animals he takes care of! The pictures in this book are STUNNING!! A huge favorite in our house!

Who doesn’t love Peter Rabbit? He sure gets in a lot of trouble but it is fun reading about him and his friend’s adventures!
The Classic Treasury of Aesop’s Fables – Inside are twenty classic fables, including The Tortoise and the Hare, The Goose Who Laid the Golden Eggs, and The City Mouse and the Country Mouse. Passed from generation to generation, Aesop’s best-loved fables are presented here with beautiful illustrations that bring these naughty, bold, brave, and lovable creatures to life.
Aesop’s Fables is just classic! It has all those stories you have heard as a child and all the lessons that go with them! You will learn about character, good and bad, and the value of hard work! As a child, I loved The Bumper Book, with poems like The Owl and the Pussycat, and stories like The Wee Kitten who Sucked her Thumb.
